Arch Math
Objective:
Arch Math is designed as a kinesthetic learning game. It requires a teacher, or mentor or senior student acting as a tutor or coach and a student or group of students. The football game is a metaphor in which the student or students learn by doing. If you work with a group then you set up red and blue teams and the teacher is the referee. The movement of the football is predicated on getting questions right.
The game utilizes a series of game cards that are drawn alternately from a stack on the board. The student and opponent place a football on their respective 20 yard lines. They decide on a number (score) that must be reached to declare a winner. The teacher can set a timer and when time runs out the group with the highest score ( if you are working with a group) is declared the winner.
The student draws a card and is instructed to perform some type of calculation. Typically it would involve rolling the dice and adding or multiplying a specific number to the amount rolled. If the student is correct, he or she is instructed to advance that many yards. If they achieve a touchdown they get to kick an extra point .
Scoring: Touchdown = 6 points
Field Goal = 1
The question format is written in Microsoft Word so the teacher can build upon the series of questions provided.
There are also thought problems and depending on the level of the student they can be simple or complex.
The cards also contain wild cards like ADVANCE 10 YARDS, KICK A FIELD GOAL! and much more.
Sample Questions:
ROLL THE DICE...Multiply the amount shown on the dice times 3...If correct, advance 5 yards.
ROLL THE DICE...You have completed a pass for 20 yards; however, there is a penalty on the play and you are assesd a penalty for 10 yards...how far do you advance? If correct, kick a field goal!
Challenge question:
There are 60 seconds remaining on the clock...each play takes 15 seconds...How many plays can they get off before the clock runs out? If correct, Touchdown!!!!
