Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does my child need tutoring?

If you are unsure that tutoring is the right choice for your child and your family, use our list below as a guide. We have helped many children to overcome the challenges listed below. If any of the following statements are true for your child, please call us and we can tell you how we can assist you!

  • Your child’s grades do not reflect his or her true level of ability.
  • You have seen your child’s grades getting lower, and there is no obvious reason why.
  • Whenever it’s time to do homework, you have a battle with your child, or your child won’t accept help from a parent
  • Your child’s teacher or counselor suggests that he or she needs extra help.
  • Your child has a learning disability (LD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
  • Your child seems anxious or worried about school, or simply has lost motivation when it comes to schoolwork.
  • Your child lies or forgets about tests or homework assignments.
  • Your child dislikes his or her teacher or experiences the teacher as unhelpful and hard to approach.
  • Your child says things like “I can’t do this”, “I don’t get it”, “and I’m not as smart as the other kids”.
  • Your child needs test preparation help.
  • Your child has been bored in school, or school does not seem to challenge your child appropriately.

How long will it take to see improvement in my child’s grades?

You will begin to see improvements in your child’s skills almost immediately. You will see significant improvement in the area of instruction by the end of the first intensive contract period. We recommend starting with six weeks, two times a week in order to see amazing results!

How often should my child meet with a tutor?

This depends on your child and his or her needs. If your child is struggling, it is best to provide them with intensive tutoring in order to catch up to a grade level. We recommend at least two sessions per week during the initial period. As your child catches up, one session per week is generally sufficient to support your child’s continued progress. We do not recommend any fewer than four sessions per month, but we are certainly willing to accommodate the unique needs of your family.

How much does it cost?

APT provides services at rates that are comparable and often lower than most major learning centers and other tutoring firms. Although our rates are quite competitive, we provide one-on-one customized instruction, we include your child’s teacher in our circle of communication with your permission, and we actively seek the very best tutors in our area.

What kind of student is right for tutoring? Who is your “typical” client?

We help all kinds of learners: kids who struggle, kids at the top of their class, and everyone in between. The beauty of one-on-one tutoring is that it is custom designed to meet the needs of your child. There is no other child like yours! We value and respect individual differences in our learners, and when we really get to know your child and how he or she learns, we create success. Although our clients come to us for a variety of reasons, all of them have one thing in common: they want their child to experience confidence and a strong sense of themselves as a capable, independent learner.

How do you select your tutors?

APT has a rigorous tutor selection process that includes an in-depth interview, background check, and reference check. Our tutors consist of full-time teachers, retired teachers, and college students. All of these professionals have experience and appropriate degrees or certification. Beyond the excellent resume, we look for people who are enthusiastic, warm, and engaging. We seek educators who love what they do, and want to share their passion for teaching and learning with students. We make sure our tutors have a plan for motivating the most reluctant students, and for encouraging their continued success. Our tutors truly care about their students!

How do I get started?

It’s easy. Contact us now and get all of your questions answered. We will do a free consultation via phone or in your home if you would like. Once we have discussed your child’s needs, we match you up with a tutor.
